    302510 - USFS Basics Skating

    The Basic Skating levels range from introductory to intermediate skating experience. Classes are divided into progressive levels, so children can learn with peers who have similar skating ability.

    Basic 1-2
    For those who have never skated, or have never had formal lessons, skaters will learn the basics of figure skating, how to balance on the ice as well as forward and backward skating, one foot glides, forward and backward swizzles, and snow plow stops. Other elements include two foot turns, one foot glides and backward two foot glides.

    Basic 3-4
    Prerequisite: Basic 1-2. Elements include forward stroking, forward pumps, backward one foot glides, forward slaloms, beginning two foot spins, forward inside and outside edges on a circle, forward crossovers, standing outside 3-turns, backward pumps, backward stroking and backward snowplow stop.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Proper fit and lacing of skates, appropriate attire, and helmets recommended. Rental skates are included in the class fees.

    302525 - Winter Break Skating

    The Tot Learn to Skate levels are introductory classes divided into four progressive levels designed for children with little or no prior skating experience.

    Tot 1-2
    This class is for young beginners who have never skated before. The class focuses on introducing young children to beginning skating skills in an atmosphere of fun, using games and ice-safe toys to help teach basic skills. Elements include proper falling and getting up, marching, gliding, forward and backward swizzles, curves and beginning stops.

    Tot 3-4
    Prerequisite: Tot 1-2. Elements include forward pumps and stroking, advanced backward swizzles, one foot glides on a circle and beginning forward crossovers, backward pumps and backward stroking.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Proper fit and lacing of skates, appropriate attire, and helmets recommended. Rental skates are included in the class fee.

    302530 - Minor Hawks

    MINOR HAWKS: AGES 4-11. Developmental skating program to give skaters a solid foundation of skating, stick handling, shooting and passing. Skaters will learn how to be more proficient and agile on the ice. Proper skating techniques are the primary focus of the levels. Skaters should have passed Tot 1 or Basics 1 to participate.

    Minor Hawks 1-2
    Pre-requisite: Tot 1/Basic 1:This class is for the beginner hockey player who wants to learn the basics of hockey including turning, skating on one foot, skating backwards, stopping, and skating with a puck.

    Minor Hawks 3-4
    Pre-requisite: Minor Hawks 1-2: This class is for the advanced beginner to intermediate hockey player. This class will expand upon skills learned in Minor Hawks 1-2 including puck handling, shooting, and game play.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Skates and a helmet Rental skates are included in the class fee.

    302800 - Learn to Speed Skate with Northbrook Speed Skating Club

    Learn to Speedskate, fun for the whole family! From pond to podium, Speedskating has been called "NASCAR on Ice" - it's a sport where all can experience the thrill of speed and the camaraderie of the skating community. At 88 medals and counting, US Speedskating has won more OIympic medals than any other sport. For 70 years, the Northbrook Speed Skating Club has sent athletes to every Winter Olympics since 1952. Under the coaching of Northbrook Speed Skating Club, learn the basics of Speedskating, such as position, straightaway, corners and starts. After learning the basics, participants will have the skills needed to join the Team. Figure, hockey or speedskates can be worn, while gloves, shin guards, a neck guard and helmet are required. All levels are welcome.

    Northbrook Speedskating Club has been training and sending athletes to every Winter Olympics since 1952. With particular emphasis on quality and technique, classes are tailored to help each participant achieve their personal athletic goals, regardless of their primary sport. Through the American Development Model, as viewed by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, age-appropriate acquisition of fundamental movement patterns apply broadly across youth sports. Exercises are designed to support coordination, speed and agility, strength and stamina, power and acceleration. Workouts will include plyometrics, the use of slideboards, and learning to maintain flexibility to reduce the risk of injury. Participants should bring their own water bottle and yoga mat to each class.
